Hi again -

I got this mix together this week for a taiji lesson that was snowed off - here in England we're not that used to snow any more and when we get a bit people stay at home. I thought I'd post it now, though, as it has a Christmassy flavour at the end there.

All My Own Work, 11 November 2009

Hi all -

I've stuck together two mixes of my own work that I did to make a sound background for the opening party of an exhibition of my photographic work that's up in the Lake District at the moment. I think it drifts along nicely, but it's verrrrry laid back (no beats or anything unless you count raindrops on microphones).

It's all stuff I've done, and runs through unaltered field recordings and some 'time-lapse' recording experiments through quite a bit of treated water recordings and some very treated trio improvisations I did in 2006 into some more recent time-stretch based electroacoustic pieces. stuff occurs and reoccurs over the course of the mix, so I'm not putting a track listing. if you like what you hear you can find a lot of it at www.music.freakout.biz.

Taiji Tunes rides again!

Hi all -

due to popular request and the fact that I want it available so some people can hear it who I've suggested a project to, here is another outing for last November's eclectic-as-a-freegan's-lunch-menu mix. it's less beat-driven than other mixes I've posted on here, in fact large parts of it are positively drony (three pieces by Phill Niblock one after the other is the clue there). still, there are two chunks of beats, one at around 120bpm and one at 80/160 depending on whether you measure the Thievery Corporation remix or the Photek track straight after.

I did the mix for my taiji teacher and we have tried it out on his classes. they weren't too freaked out. it's nice for solo practice too - the idea is that it drifts in from nothing, warms up into a beaty bit, gets drony and deep, warms up again, and calms down for a little standing meditation at the end. it's an hour dead on and the file's around 84MB.

the mix was done this afternoon live from two old Numark DJ-CD decks to hard disc via a Spirit mixer and (it goes without saying) is for promotional use only. it goes from a bit of old soul and funk through hiphop and, er, wonky to a downtempo (but accelerating) sequence of disco and house. there are also a few Middle Eastern and African tunes in there ...

Francis lives in Manchester (though he's a Cumbrian originally), and is a big part of That Amazing Thing!, a team that has, over the years, moved from house parties to full-on club nights and back. He came up to Eclectic two or three times and pleased everyone with some lovely music.

On That Amazing Thing!'s current plans, he says: "Maybe when you write the blog you could say that while we've been on downtime for a year (+!) we're just recommencing operations with 3 parties coming up. Tell the folks that the site now is still saying "watch this space" but the space will be filled with news, new mixes of which this is one, etc, shortly. In the words of LFO: WE ARE BACK!" Andi Chapple: Howgills Lounge (Disc B)

here's this week's mix (and next week's too, probably, as I am going on holiday). it's 74 minutes, 93MB at 175 kbps and it's an example of a production-quality CD-ready mix. it was recorded live, although I think I fixed one stumble afterwards, and then a lot of work was done on post-production to keep levels even and the sound bright and exciting. here's the link:
